The purpose of the cultural spatial analysis (CSA) was to identify priority areas for maintenance of cultural values, including spiritual, communal, material, recreational, artistic, and symbolic values. The CSA was undertaken by individuals or small teams from the First Nations and other local communities in the region. These individuals and teams first reviewed and validated existing data and then gathered new data from elders and other knowledgeable individuals. The methodology for mapping cultural values was developed collaboratively through consultation with representatives of First Nations and other communities. Each group collected new data in the following steps:
Places were evaluated for importance (irreplaceability) and vulnerability, and conflicts and compatibilities among the values concerned were identified and analyzed.
